FLYING TO MAWIMBI
INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS
- Currently 15 airlines fly to Lusaka (LUN) from international and local hubs. Airlines include Proflight Zambia, SAA and Airlink from South Africa, Emirates from Dubai, Qatar from Doha.
- Lusaka is only 2 hrs flight from OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, South Africa with SAA or Airlink.
- Proflight operates a service from Cape Town, Souht Africa and up to Livingstone, and then on to Lusaka. You can take a charter plane from Livingstone up to Chunga Airstrip after spending time at the magnificent Victoria Falls.
CHARTER FLIGHTS
- Charter flights are available from Lusaka and Livingstone, as well as other small airfields subject to availability – cost varies on number of people and type of aircraft. There is no scheduled flight at present, but plans are being hatched for the future!
- It’s between 50-70 minutes to fly from Lusaka or Livingstone to Chunga Airfield in the center of Kafue National Park.

COMPLIMENTARY GAME DRIVE
- You’ll be picked up from Chunga Airfield and enjoy your first Game Drive from the airstrip to MAWIMBI Bush Camp when flying in (45 mins).

Road conditions vary greatly from season to season. In the dry season (May – Oct) you may get away with a high clearance 2 wheel drive but a 4 x 4 vehicle is highly recommended for Kafue National Park, and mandatory in the green/wet season (Nov – April).
BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE AIRPORT
- Use the ablutions.
- Change money here (or ATMs in Mumbwa)
- Buy a local sim card from MTN Zambia, Airtel to avoid roaming charges.
REFUELLING OPTIONS
Ideally, refuel before you leave, as filling stations may well have fuel, but may not be able to dispense it due to power outages.
- 134kms from Lusaka International Airport, there’s a fuel station at Nangoma Mission.
- 16kms before Mumbwa, turn right for 4kms to the Zambian Airforce Base for fuel.
- If you’re coming from Lusaka or the Copperbelt, refuel at Oil Bay filling station just before the turn off to Mumbwa. If it’s open, there’s a stocked shop and you can buy snacks (credit cards accepted if the network is available. Toilets are substandard.
- Mumbwa – you can refuel at the Total filling station at the 1st traffic circle (3kms off the M9)
- If you’re coming from Livingstone, refuel at Kalomo before entering Kafue NP. Or at Mumbwa if you’re entering after Hook Bridge.
